about

Of all the tracks on 'Now We Have Power', 'Bedhead' probably went through the most changes across the 16 or so months between the mixing of this demo (August 2016) and mastering the final track (December 2017), and this demo was around the third to exist since the basic track was written in 2010. Some really important changes literally happened just a few days before entering the mastering studio.

As you’ll hear, the song is very much recognisably the same piece but there were lots of decisions still to be made – especially with regards to the vocals, as we originally planned for there to be a lot more vocals happening across the whole song. We even recorded a whole different set of vocal parts starting right from the beginning of the tune but were not satisfied with them and so went to work redesigning everything. This led to lots more detail in the instrumentation and some new melodies were written to replace vocals that we had ditched. The acoustic guitars survived into the final version as did many of the synth and Rhodes parts. Paul's drums here are recorded at his old practise shed...known to the band as Shed Benteens (now replaced with a snazzy new home recording studio). Brad had laid down a basic guide bass part that he later rewrote and rerecorded. And of course we added the trumpet overdubs from Mark Kesel.

There is also a “missing” section in the middle that was originally intended to be a space for a trumpet solo. As nice as this section is we strongly felt that it was killing the pacing of the album at that point, and so got out the scissors once again and…cut!

Cutting stuff was actually really fun on this record, something we’d been a bit scared to do with previous albums. For example, 'A Tall Tale' used to be 20 mins long!!

We hope you enjoy hearing this little peak behind the scenes of how Sanguine Hum gradually put a track together.
